A friend of mine who is
yet to be mobilized for the National Youth Service called me and said she’s
tired of staying at home, she really needs a job. I told her to apply for the
next VSO-ICS Cycle, the next question she asked puzzled me “How much will they
pay me”? I told her it’s a voluntary job and she won’t be paid any salary, she
said “I’m not interested, its money I need”
That’s the problem most
Nigerian Youths are facing, everyone wants a job that pays huge salary, no one
wants to serve, no one wants to help others achieve their goals, everyone is just
concerned about themselves and everyone wants to make huge money.
On the 22nd
of October, 2013, volunteers on the VSO-ICS Project in Lafia embarked on a
Community Action Day at a Skills Acquisition Centre, Lafia to sensitize people
on volunteerism as a tool for Social and Economic Development.
“Volunteering in a
simple term means donating one’s labour without monetary compensation. It is
generally considered an altruistic activity and is intended to promote good or
improve human quality of life. In return, this activity can produce a feeling
of self-worth and respect. Volunteering is also renowned for skill development,
socialization and fun; it is also intended to make contacts for possible
employment”.
We had both men and
women, young and old in attendance. ICS volunteers enlightened them on the
importance of volunteering using some volunteers’ personal experiences (both UK
& National) and they were stirred up with passion into action to volunteer
in whatever capacity they can; wherever they find themselves.
We came up with the
slogan “In the process of developing
others, you also develop yourself”
I’m proud to be a
volunteer.
